April 2007 Wright and Roberts take Bronze
What an end to a fantastic season for Bob Team Wright. A 5th, 6th and now a Bronze Medal to add to the collection.
From the first day of training Wright and Roberts were playing with the top 3 positions on the tail of the Russian and Swiss Team. Graham Richardson the ice coach was chuffed to pieces on the performance of the GB1 Team and even GB2 was in the top 10 this was looking like a good race for the British Teams.
The second day of training and we had a little play with a different set of runners, we were lying in 8th place a lot of Teams thought that we were lucky the day before. However we changed the runners to the set we would use for the race and we came down the hill second fastest that run. The Swiss driver even asked what Martin was doing, when the Swiss ask you questions you know you are doing something right.
The day before the race Martin and Matt cleaned the sled and checked all the nuts and bolts were secure and anything and everything that could be greased was greased. The runners were then cleaned to the highest possible standard, with the Ipod blasting away the two man crew polished like demons knowing a top 3 podium was in there grasps. The runners were cleaned then covered, the sled polished and covered with a heater placed inside to keep it warm and the grease moving.
The day of the race and Martin walked the track with Graham the ice coach trailing behind in case they wanted to discuss the track. At the top of the track it was like a bee hive, activity everywhere. Our sled had a lot of interest because we were now in the top 3. The Russian, Germans and Swiss paid a little visit. Looking at our runners and looking at the sled to see what was different.
The first run began and some good times were being set and i thought that it was going to be a tough race than first predicted. However our first run was an absolute blinder 58.09 left us in second place after the first run. The start was a 5.34 but myself and matt knew we could do better. We prepared for the second run knowing we had to have a good start and i had to do the rest.
My heart was thumping in my chest, the sled was set and off we went a 5.31 start, that was fantastic now it was down to me. The run was good but it didn't feel as fast as the first run, we were clean all the way down. We crossed the finish line in 58.83 we had slipped to 3rd place the Russians had piped us.
A Bronze medal......I gave matt a hug, the lad had worked hard and this was my best result to date. Well done Matt.
